Risk reduction through minimum use and informed use of pesticides

While information on pest and pesticide management is abundant in the North, it is far from sufficient in the South, despite the Internet. Multinational and national pesticide manufacturers promote 'product stewardship', 'responsible care' and 'safe use' training. Most pesticide end users in developing countries rely solely on sales promotion material and other information from the pesticide manufacturers and the dealers.

There is therefore a need for neutral information and awareness raising with regard to alternatives to chemical pesticides , health and environmental effects of pesticides, proper handling and personal protection. In many countries there is also a substantial need for simple information - written and oral - in more than English or the official language of the country. National, regional and local stakeholders such as civil society groups play a significant role in providing ideas and assistance ideally in collaboration with other stakeholders with better financial resources.
